69 tick species may produce neurotoxins capable of causing suffocation
Researchers have identified up to 69 tick species capable of producing powerful neurotoxins that can paralyse the muscles involved in breathing and potentially cause suffocation. The best-documented example is an Australian species, but the threat is far more widespread than previously thought. Ticks are already well known as carriers of serious infectious diseases.
