Sperm whales alter their clicks when ships are nearby, study finds

A new study found that sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean Sea shorten the intervals between their clicks and favour one click pattern over another when vessels are nearby. The findings highlight the impact of underwater noise pollution from shipping on whale communication. Scientists warn that prolonged exposure to such noise could have serious consequences for the species.
