Tau protein disrupts mitochondria — a new target in Alzheimer's research

Stanford-led researchers found that tau protein can disrupt mitochondria by reversing the normal flow of electrons, generating reactive oxygen species, cellular stress and inflammation. Blocking this reverse electron transport restored function and improved learning and memory in flies and mice. The findings point to a novel therapeutic avenue for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, though human trials remain ahead.
