AMOC stayed strong 3.4 million years ago despite Indian Ocean inflow nearly shutting down

Ancient seafloor sediments reveal that around 3.4 million years ago, the flow of warm, salty water from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic nearly ceased – yet the AMOC did not weaken as climate models predicted, and parts of it actually strengthened. The finding challenges established assumptions about how these two ocean systems are linked. Scientists say it has implications for future climate modelling.
