Illegal sand mining is destroying Cape Verde's coastline and farmland
Decades of illegal sea-sand extraction for the construction industry on Santiago island in Cape Verde have severely eroded the coastline, destroying ecosystems and causing farmland salinisation. The illegal trade has stripped beaches of their former appearance and forces women into hazardous work. Authorities have failed to halt the practice despite its mounting environmental and social costs.
