Microsoft shutting down Exchange Web Services — the API targeted in the Midnight Blizzard attack

From October 1st, Microsoft will begin disabling its Exchange Web Services (EWS) API, with a full shutdown scheduled for April 2027. The nearly 20-year-old API allowed applications to access Exchange mailboxes, calendars and contacts, and was implicated in the 2024 Midnight Blizzard cyberattack. Microsoft says EWS no longer meets modern standards for security and reliability; recent research found 99% of organisations experienced API security issues in the past year.
