Cave in Spain yields 120 Latin inscriptions — largest known set in any Roman sanctuary cave

Archaeologists at Cova Dones cave in Millares, near Valencia, have uncovered 120 Latin inscriptions, making it the largest known collection of such texts in any cave sanctuary across the Roman Empire. Excavations carried out in May and June 2026 revealed the inscriptions — some addressed to a mysterious "Lady" — are linked to rituals performed by Roman women more than 200 metres underground. The cave also contains prehistoric rock paintings dating back over 24,000 years, while the ancient sanctuary itself is roughly 2,000 years old.
