Nearly 1,000 harassment complaints at EU Commission — but counsellors can't investigate

Since September 2024, nearly 960 reports have been submitted to the European Commission's harassment counselling team by staff. The 40-strong team is headed by chief confidential counsellor Lene Naesager, appointed in May 2024 and reporting to Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin. However, the counsellors have no power to launch formal investigations into allegations, raising questions about the system's effectiveness amid POLITICO's broader probe into toxic management and excessive bureaucracy at the Commission.
