Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts — red alert issued for 1.6 million people
Guatemalan authorities declared a red alert — the highest level of danger — following the eruption of Fuego Volcano, located roughly 35 kilometres from the capital. The alert covers the departments of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, home to around 1.6 million people. Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee ash, toxic gases and lava flows.
