NASA's IXPE may have proven 90-year-old theory about how empty space behaves

NASA's IXPE telescope has made a first-of-its-kind measurement of magnetar 1E 1547.0-5408, potentially confirming a physical phenomenon predicted 90 years ago but never directly observed — the behaviour of empty space under an extremely strong magnetic field. The results were published Wednesday in the journal Nature. A magnetar is a rapidly rotating neutron star with a magnetic field over a trillion times stronger than Earth's.
