Neptune's inner moons may be rubble from an ancient lunar massacre

A new study has identified an unexpected mineral in two of Neptune's inner moons, pointing to a violent past in which a large captured object obliterated the planet's original, larger satellites. Researchers suggest the current inner moons are made up of rubble from those destroyed bodies, effectively turned "inside out." The findings shed new light on the turbulent early history of Neptune's moon system.
