GM and SAIC extend 20-year partnership, plan 30 new EVs by 2030

GM and SAIC Motor have extended their partnership for 20 years.

Companies will launch at least 30 new energy vehicles by 2030.

Buick and Cadillac will apparently take on a bigger role in China.

The tide has turned against foreign automakers in China, which once enjoy great success in the country. While German companies are among the hardest hit , General Motor sold almost a million new energy vehicles last year. The company and its joint ventures also delivered nearly 1.9 million vehicles, which was a 2.3% increase from 2024.

Given that, it’s little surprise General Motors and SAIC Motor have announced plans to extend their joint venture partnership for another 20 years. This means it will extend to 2047, which is 50 years after it originally began in 1997.

GM said the move positions the joint venture to “accelerate technological transformation, explore new growth opportunities, and deliver sustainable profitability.” Speaking of which, SAIC-GM will launch at least 30 new energy vehicles by 2030 and “deploy more technology solutions developed in China for the Chinese market.” The company also announced plans to “sharpen its focus on the Buick and Cadillac brands in China.”

Buick’s new Electra sub-brand has quickly emerged as an important player as the companies noted they delivered over 10,000 E7s during its first month on sale. That’s an impressive feat and the companies are now looking to export the model to “select global markets” starting in October.

GM China President John Roth said, “Today’s agreement reflects our shared confidence in SAIC-GM and its long-term growth potential. We are committed to strong performance in the China market, and we see meaningful opportunities to compete in select international markets: the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific.”

Bloomberg reports the agreement means GM-SAIC will also keep their joint venture with Guangxi Automobile Group. It spawned SAIC-GM-Wuling, which builds the best-selling NEV in China as more than 435,000 Hong Guang EVs were sold last year.
