Mechanism of female restitution in sugarcane hybrids uncovered
Scientists have resolved the meiotic mechanism behind female restitution in interspecific sugarcane hybrids between Saccharum officinarum and S. spontaneum. Haplotype-resolved F1 genomes revealed duplicated, partially recombined maternal chromatids consistent with second division restitution. The findings also identify distinctive recombination signatures and could enable new breeding strategies to accelerate sugarcane crop improvement.
