Herpesvirus reactivation linked to COVID-19 severity and long COVID outcomes

A Nature study found that chronic reactivation of specific herpesviruses and anelloviruses occurs during both acute and long COVID-19, tracking closely with disease severity, inflammation levels and patient outcomes. The immune signatures identified could serve as prognostic markers. The findings offer a new biological lens through which to understand why some patients develop long COVID.
