80-million-year-old snake brain reveals early reptiles were far more diverse than thought
An exceptionally preserved 80-million-year-old snake fossil from Brazil, named Tametara mirim, has allowed scientists to reconstruct the creature's brain in detail. The analysis shows it was adapted for burrowing, while other ancient snakes from the same era were suited to above-ground or marine life. The findings reveal that snakes had already diversified into very different habitats and sensory systems by 80 million years ago.
