Doe Run smelter pays $150m to settle lead poisoning claims of 1,373 Peruvians
US firm Doe Run Company, a subsidiary of Renco Group, has agreed to pay $150 million in an out-of-court settlement to 1,373 Peruvians poisoned by the company's Andean smelter as children. Cardinal Pedro Barreto, 82, who spent nearly 20 years campaigning against the company while receiving death threats, learned of the settlement during a visit to Pope Leo XIV in Rome and called it "a historic milestone."
