Ghana passes law threatening cocoa farmers with 20-year prison sentences
Ghana's parliament passed a bill on July 30 that grants all cocoa farms protected status and makes it a criminal offence to repurpose them without government authorisation. Farmers who violate the law face up to 20 years in prison. The law's contents were not made public until August 2, and farmers have criticised the measure as excessively harsh.
