Analogue horror: why new wave genre films are obsessed with retro tech
This summer's indie horror hits "Obsession" and "Backrooms" each grossed hundreds of millions of dollars on minimal budgets, directed by Gen Z filmmakers Curry Barker and Kane Parsons who first gained fame on YouTube. Both films deliberately use analogue props — record stores, vintage station wagons, old-fashioned gag gifts — to create an eerie pre-digital atmosphere. Critics are calling it a broader trend in which modern horror filmmakers embrace obsolete technology to evoke nostalgia and dread.
