Half the world's dams could be inoperable by 2060 due to sediment buildup

A new study warns that about 20% of the world's reservoirs are already at high risk of filling with sediment, and by 2060 half could become inoperable. Soil, silt and rocks accumulate in reservoirs, displacing water storage and stressing dam structures not built to handle such loads. Geologist Amy East warns that storage capacity is being lost faster than new dams can replace it. The American West is identified as a major hotspot for this growing threat.
