Colombia enacts landmark law banning female genital mutilation

Colombia has enacted a landmark bill banning female genital mutilation, a practice still carried out by some members of an indigenous group in the country. The debate around the law was fuelled by cases such as that of a mother whose baby was subjected to FGM by her grandmother without her consent. The new law marks a significant step in efforts to eradicate the practice.
