SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage crashes into the moon at 5,400 mph

A spent upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, left in orbit since 2005, struck the moon on August 5 at approximately 5,436 mph (8,748 km/h), near the Einstein crater. Two preprint studies posted on arXiv indicated the event may have been visible through telescopes from parts of North and South America. The truck-sized object had been drifting in an elliptical Earth orbit for nearly two decades before its lunar impact.
