Astronomers spot a supermassive black hole 30,000 light-years from its galaxy's core

For the first time, astronomers may have detected a supermassive black hole that has wandered to the outskirts of its galaxy — more than 30,000 light-years from its centre. The object was identified by the light it emitted while consuming a star. Until now, supermassive black holes had been found almost exclusively at the centres of galaxies.
