Tiny Amazon patch likely holds 40,000 insect species — many new to science

A large-scale megaproject cataloguing rainforest insects across hundreds of sites in the Amazon estimates that a single small patch of forest likely harbours around 40,000 insect species, many of them previously unknown to science. Researchers are sampling from ground level to the canopy to build a comprehensive inventory of Amazonian insect biodiversity.
