Aboriginal Police Officers Sue NT Authorities Over Racial Abuse and Underpayment

Aboriginal community police officers (ACPOs/APOs) who served in Australia's Northern Territory between 1998 and 2025 have launched a class action against the NT government and police force. The lawsuit alleges systemic discrimination, widespread use of racist slurs against Indigenous colleagues and community members, and underpayment for doing the same work as non-Indigenous officers. Lead plaintiff Shawn Lewfatt of Darwin, an ACPO since 1998, says decades of abuse have left him dreading wearing his uniform.
