One in Three Australian Students Fail NAPLAN Benchmarks as Literacy Scores Fall

Results from this year's NAPLAN tests, taken in March by 1.2 million Australian students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9, show one in three pupils failing to meet national benchmarks. Reading and writing scores declined for almost every age group, while numeracy results offered some encouragement. Education Minister Jason Clare acknowledged "real challenges" in the data, released Wednesday by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.
