White storks bounce back in Netherlands: from 16 to 2,000 breeding pairs in 40 years

The number of breeding white stork pairs in the Netherlands has risen from just 16 to around 2,000 in four decades. The recovery is considered one of Western Europe's greatest wildlife conservation successes. Long-running reintroduction programmes and habitat protection drove the rebound.
