Spirit rover's 20-year-old data reveals liquid water may have covered large areas of Mars

Scientists at Edith Cowan University in Australia have reanalysed archival data collected by NASA's Spirit rover between 2004 and 2010 inside Gusev Crater. They found widespread traces of crystalline hematite and altered magnetite in Martian soil — iron-bearing minerals consistent with ancient water-rock interactions. The findings suggest liquid water may once have covered far more of Mars than previously thought.
