Coastal cities sinking faster than sea levels rise, new research finds
New research shows that people in densely populated coastal areas experience an average relative sea-level rise of about 6 mm per year — nearly three times the global coastal average. Key drivers of land subsidence include groundwater pumping, oil and gas extraction, heavy urban development, sediment compaction, and natural geological processes. The problem simultaneously threatens millions living in the world's largest coastal cities.
