Danube drying up: Hungary to shut nuclear plant, river beds reveal hidden artefacts

Record heatwaves across Europe have severely lowered water levels in major rivers. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that the Paks nuclear power plant, which uses the Danube for cooling, will have to be shut down — the first such event in 44 years. Historically low river levels in the Danube and Rhine have exposed artefacts on the riverbed. Poland's temperature record was broken in Słubice, where thermometers reached 40.5°C.
