Hungary shuts Paks nuclear plant for first time in 44 years as Danube dries up

Hungary was forced to shut down most of its sole nuclear power plant in Paks for the first time in 44 years, as the drying Danube made safe cooling impossible. The plant is expected to be fully powered down within days as river levels fall further. The heatwave sweeping from western to central and southern Europe is forecast to bring temperatures near 40°C to parts of the region, with Budapest and Vienna expected to hit 37°C.
