Over 50,000 crossed into Ceuta — Moroccans now stranded on streets of Spanish enclave

More than 50,000 people crossed into Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on the north African coast, this week after news spread that hundreds had swum across from Morocco. Among them is 44-year-old Moroccan Youssef El Abbas, deported from Spain in 2019 after losing his job in Bilbao, who saw a chance to reclaim his former life. Many now find themselves in limbo on Ceuta's streets, uncertain about their prospects of reaching mainland Spain.
