Giraffes can mentally add up quantities — outperforming dogs and horses

Researchers at a Barcelona zoo ran hundreds of trials with four giraffes, rewarding them with carrot pieces. Two of the animals, Nuru and Njano, consistently demonstrated the ability to mentally combine quantities — a skill considered a foundation for more advanced mathematical reasoning. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, suggest giraffes outperform dogs and horses on this task.
