Danube drought forces Hungary to shut down Paks nuclear plant for first time in 44 years

On 2 August, Hungary shut down its only nuclear power plant, Paks — which supplies half the country's electricity — due to critically low water levels in the Danube, which is needed to cool the reactors. Such a shutdown has not occurred in Hungary for 44 years. Romania also shut down one reactor and Serbia disconnected pumping stations for the same reason.
