West Africa tightens anti-LGBTQ+ laws: Senegal doubles prison terms, Niger criminalises same-sex relations
Senegal in March doubled the maximum prison sentence for gay sex to 10 years and criminalised the "promotion" of homosexuality. Niger in February outlawed same-sex intimacy for the first time in its history. Campaigners warn that across West Africa, politicians increasingly use LGBTQ+ people as scapegoats to consolidate political power.
