Aug. 12: solar eclipse, Perseids and Milky Way — a rare day for stargazers

August 12 offers an exceptionally rare combination of celestial events within a single 24-hour window. A partial solar eclipse will be visible across Alaska, eastern Canada and parts of the northeastern US, while a total eclipse will trace a path over eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. That same evening, the Perseid meteor shower peaks under a moonless sky alongside brilliant Venus and the Milky Way. An estimated 779 million people across North America, Europe and North Africa will be able to see at least part of the eclipse.
