Fighting erupts in Ethiopia's Tigray between TPLF and federal army, raising war fears

Clashes have broken out between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and Ethiopia's federal army in a contested area of the northern region, raising fears of a renewed war. The previous Tigray conflict of 2020–2022 left around 600,000 dead, and the region has not yet recovered. Mediation efforts by the US and the African Union appear to have failed to prevent the escalation.
