Newborns in Warsaw Uprising cellars — a fight for survival
On 1 August 1944, Halina gave birth to her son Staś on Śliska Street, just a few hours before the Warsaw Uprising broke out. The boy spent his first weeks of life in a cellar with almost no water, milk or clean nappies. Dozens of other newborns born during the uprising faced the same desperate struggle for survival.
