Mildred Pitts Walter, author of books for Black children, dies at 103

Mildred Pitts Walter, who wrote books for Black children after noticing they were absent from the literature her kindergarten students read in South Central Los Angeles in the 1950s and '60s, has died at the age of 103. Her work was driven by a desire to give young Black readers characters they could identify with.
