Two 40,000-year-old bird figurines carved from mammoth ivory found in Germany

Archaeologists have unearthed two thumbnail-sized bird figurines carved from mammoth ivory at Germany's Hohle Fels Cave, dating back approximately 40,000 years. The sculptures, each less than an inch long, rank among the world's oldest known examples of figurative art. Hohle Fels has previously yielded other landmark prehistoric artworks.
