Northern Ireland misses budget deadline — automatic 5% spending cap now triggered

Northern Ireland's cross-community government failed to agree a multi-year budget before a legal deadline that passed on Friday. The missed deadline automatically triggers a cap that will restrict 2026–27 spending to 5% below last year's expenditures — billions of pounds less than local leaders say is needed for hospitals, schools and key services. Newly appointed Secretary of State Chris Bryant faced immediate financial demands from local leaders during his first meetings in the role.
