Laser reshapes metal before it heats up — Manchester breakthrough
Simulations by researchers at the University of Manchester show that a laser pulse can trigger a phase change in metal by reorganising its electrons before the atomic lattice heats up at all. The mechanism relies on so-called "hot electrons" that effectively drive the transformation independently of thermal heating. The finding could open new possibilities for ultra-precise metal processing and engineering novel material properties.
