Russia plugs labour shortages with Asian workers as permits surge 30% in first half of year

Russia issued more than 147,000 work permits to foreign nationals in the first half of this year, a rise of nearly one third compared with the same period a year earlier, as companies scramble to fill acute labour shortages. Workers are being brought in primarily from Asian countries. The labour crisis is largely attributed to the military mobilisation linked to the war in Ukraine.
