27% of physical game releases need downloads to work — no internet, no play
Testers at DoesItPlay have examined thousands of physical game releases and found that 27% require some form of download — either to fix game-breaking bugs or to obtain core content — to function as intended. The ratio rises to 34% for PS5 games and 50% for Nintendo Switch titles. Sony's recent decision to phase out physical PlayStation game production has reignited debate about game preservation and ownership rights.
