40,000-year-old miniature bird figurines discovered in Germany
Archaeologists from the University of Tübingen have unearthed two miniature bird figurines, roughly 40,000 years old, in the Hohle Fels cave in the Swabian Jura in south-west Germany, naming them their "find of the year". The artefacts date to the Aurignacian culture, associated with the first modern humans to reach the upper Danube region. The cave, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, previously yielded the famous Venus of Hohle Fels figurine.
