Scientists inch closer to restoring hearing — mouse studies offer new hope
Unlike birds and fish, humans cannot regenerate the inner-ear hair cells responsible for hearing once they are damaged by ageing or injury. However, a series of mouse experiments over the past decade has shown that mammalian inner ears retain a brief regenerative window shortly after birth. Researchers say these findings open a new avenue toward eventually restoring human hearing.
