Fire clouds over Europe — blazes in France and Spain burn area three times the size of Warsaw
Europe's ongoing fire season has consumed over 1,500 km² in France and Spain, forcing the evacuation of 330,000 people. Extreme temperatures triggered the rare phenomenon of pyrocumulonimbus clouds — fire clouds that form when an enormous blaze pushes columns of smoke, ash and water vapour high enough to generate their own storm clouds. Scientists warn that the appearance of this phenomenon in Europe is evidence of dramatic climate change.
