Hidden ecosystem found beneath the Great Lakes feeds on rocks

Researchers from the University of Michigan have discovered a vast, previously unknown ecosystem hundreds of metres beneath the Great Lakes region, existing in total darkness. The organisms living there have survived for thousands of years without sunlight, deriving energy directly from rocks. Scientists say the discovery was entirely unexpected until recently.
