Edinburgh becomes first UK city to charge tourists a 5% accommodation levy
Edinburgh began charging a 5% accommodation levy on 24 July, applicable for up to five nights, making it the first city in the United Kingdom to introduce such a tax. City authorities estimate the levy will generate up to £50 million annually. The funds are intended to support urban development and offset the impact of mass tourism.
