65,000 Evenflo REO Car Seats Recalled — Headrest May Shift in a Crash

Only two forward-facing and one rear-facing setting are affected.

Evenflo says most affected seats can continue to be used while awaiting repairs.

Parents with an Evenflo REO convertible car seat should check the model number before their next trip. The company has announced a recall covering nearly 60,000 seats sold across the United States and another 6,223 in Canada after crash testing uncovered a problem that could allow the adjustable headrest to move during a collision. Fortunately, the issue only affects a handful of headrest positions, meaning most owners can continue using their seats while Evenflo prepares a free repair.

The US recall covers 59,661 REO convertible car seats manufactured between March 2025 and June 2026, including the Brookline, Lenox, Holden, Nantucket, Danvers, and Chelsea models. According to Evenflo, post-production laboratory testing found the headrest may change position during a crash under specific conditions.

In forward-facing mode, the concern applies when the headrest is adjusted to positions 10 or 11, while rear-facing mode is affected only when the headrest is set to position 11. No injuries have been reported in connection with the issue, and the company says the seat’s structural integrity is not affected when used outside those positions.

The issue first came to light after the NHTSA tested an Evenflo REO as part of its annual compliance program. During a forward-facing crash test using a Hybrid III three-year-old dummy, investigators saw the headrest moving from a higher position to a lower one. That result prompted Evenflo to launch its own investigation. The company ultimately determined the affected seats do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

The updated recall filing explains that, in the affected headrest positions, the car seat can flex enough for the headrest latch to disengage during a crash, allowing the headrest to shift. If that happens, there may be a heightened risk of injury to the child occupant. Interestingly, Evenflo says owners do not need to stop using the recalled seats.

Instead, families should avoid the affected headrest settings until a repair is available. That means using positions 1 through 9 in forward-facing mode and positions 1 through 10 in rear-facing mode. Parents whose children have already outgrown those settings are encouraged to contact Evenflo’s ParentLink Consumer Care team for assistance.

The company is developing a free repair kit that will reinforce the headrest mechanism to prevent it from moving during a crash. Registered owners will be notified as soon as the remedy becomes available, and Evenflo says customers who incurred out-of-pocket costs to address the issue may be eligible for reimbursement under the recall program.
