40,000-year-old thumbnail-size bird carvings found in German cave

Archaeologists excavating the Hohle Fels cave in Germany have unearthed two mammoth-ivory bird figurines roughly the size of a thumbnail, dating back 40,000 years. Found in 2025 just 1.5 metres apart, the carvings bring the total number of bird figurines from Hohle Fels to three. Nicholas Conard, archaeologist at the University of Tübingen and director of excavations, said the figurines show early artists were skilled at carving delicate motifs in miniature form.
